While I would like to volunteer to help out, I suffer from emphysema and I’m unable to do very much.
I installed projection equipment in many theatres around the city, especially multiplexes. In the early sixties, I worked as an usher for Skouras, who operated both the Ridgewood Theatre and Jackson Theatres back then. As it turned out, both theatres wound up being operated by the Dias brothers, who I also did some projection work for at the Jackson and Colony theatres in Jackson Heights.
It would be very sad if this theatre was allowed to be destroyed. Queens seems to be treated poorly when it comes to Landmark Preservation. There’s another spectacular Thomas Lamb theatre in Queens that desperately needs to be saved, the RKO Keith’s in Flushing.
Hello Bruce, thank you for sharing your memories and experiences. I personally know some individuals that are trying to save the RKO Keith in Flushing and their experiences was an uphill battle. The Ridgewood Theater facade facing Myrtle avenue is landmarked so they will not be able to demolish it, however the new owners can very well destroy the rest of it, just leaving that one wall intact. We would very much want the new owners to retain some form of theater in the base of the building. Fingers crossed!
